Everything you want to know about being an advocate.

Q How much time do I have to commit to being an advocate a month?

A As much as you are able.Advocates often say that they see their partner every two weeks, but we understand that you have work, holidays and other commitments too.

QWhat is it like working with people with learning difficulties?

AThe same as working with anyone else!Some partners may have challenges with communication or physical difficulties, but we give you lots of training to give you strategies.

QWhat can being an advocate do for my future?

AIt’s great for your CV, you can show you’ve got experience working closely with someone independently.We can give you a great reference too.

QWhat if I’ve got any questions about working with my citizen partner – who do I phone?

AKaren is our volunteer co-ordinator who can support you personally and on the phone.But phone the office with any problems at all – we can refer you to someone who can help.

QHow will Leeds Advocacy support me?

AWe’ll ask you what kind of training you want, and provide regular training opportunities and get-togethers.

QHow do I keep safe while I’m working with my partner

AThis is very important to us, and will be covered during your training.We always risk assess potential partners with someone who knows them very well and will brief you very carefully.

QWhat about any expenses I have – will you pay them?

AYes, please keep receipts and speak to Karen.

QWhat kind of things do advocates do?

AThey can help with managing money, review meetings, arranging social activities.

QWhat does the training cover?

AIt covers all kinds of aspects of being an advocate, including lots of practical workshops to help you communicate with your advocate and other people that you might deal with.It gives you a great grounding in our approach to learning disability and lots of views of people with learning disabilities.

QWhat kind of people make good advocates?

AAnyone who wants to do it can really bring something great to it.You’ll have our full support to help you.
