The Asking You! Project
The Asking You! Project is about getting people with learning disabilities involved in the services they use.
Self-advocacy:
- encourages individuals to have a 'real say' about the services and support they want;
- recognises that people who use services are often expert consumers of those services;
- remembers that individuals know what they want; and
- is about allowing individuals to 'take charge' of their lives.
Involvement includes:
- going to a self-advocacy group;
- being on a management committee;
- interviewing and training workers;
- checking services;
- making information easy to understand;
- making choices about wants and needs;
- meeting new people;
- doing things that individuals did not think they could do; and
- making changes.
How is this done?
- Asking You! will work with self-advocacy groups and think of new ways to involve people with learning disabilities;
- we will try to make all information easy to understand by using plain words, pictures, symbols, photos and computers;
- we will tell others about what is being done.
