The Asking You! Project

The Asking You! Project is about getting people with learning disabilities involved in the services they use.

Self-advocacy:

  • encourages individuals to have a 'real say' about the services and support they want;
  • recognises that people who use services are often expert consumers of those services;
  • remembers that individuals know what they want; and
  • is about allowing individuals to 'take charge' of their lives.

Involvement includes:

  • going to a self-advocacy group;
  • being on a management committee;
  • interviewing and training workers;
  • checking services;
  • making information easy to understand;
  • making choices about wants and needs;
  • meeting new people;
  • doing things that individuals did not think they could do; and
  • making changes.

How is this done?

  • Asking You! will work with self-advocacy groups and think of new ways to involve people with learning disabilities;
  • we will try to make all information easy to understand by using plain words, pictures, symbols, photos and computers;
  • we will tell others about what is being done.
